Granny Liz

My grandmother "Granny Liz" passed away on Thursday night and as I was explaining to Stacey III in the simplest of terms (which seemed to all go right over his head). While she is rejoicing in heaven at the feet of her savior and there is a huge celebration going on, we are so so so sad that one of our favorite people in the world isn't here with us anymore.

I have been blessed to have four grandparents be a HUGE part of my life. We spent most weekends during the summer at the lake and growing up I got to spend one week at the lake (Granny Liz and PP lived on lake LBJ) by myself with them every summer. I looked forward to it and remember every detail of those weeks VERY fondly!!
Granny Liz had elaborate dress up clothes including several sequin tops and high heals till the cows came home so we put on countless style shows every summer. She would tack up sheets around the staircase and the world's best playhouse, or as my friend Stephanie (her best friend Dorothy's granddaughter) and I always played, S&C Psychiatry was reborn every year.
Granny Liz was still water skiing at 70 and helped teach me (and numerous others) to ski too. She was rarely very stern, but she insisted there was no crying in water skiing!! She graduated from Texas Tech and is the first in a long line of Red Raiders in our family.
In high school we would bring carloads of friends down for the weekend and she was always incredibly hospitable and welcoming. To this day she knows each of those friends names and would ask about them often. Looking back I can't imagine letting 20 high school kids take over my home! She was a fantastic cook and Stacey fell in love with her rum cake when we were dating. He asked her to make them for his grooms cake and without hesitation she made dozens of them for our wedding. These are just a smattering of the wonderful memories that I have with Granny Liz. I will miss her terribly and hate that my boys don't get any more days with such a special lady, but she loved the Lord and He was merciful. She bravely battled breast and bone cancer for several years, but she went from walking a few miles every morning to meeting her Savior in just a few short weeks.
My Dad did the service today and did a fantastic job honoring her. As he said in the service she was a beautiful example of a Proverbs 31 woman. I can only hope that when I die I have as many friends and family that think of me as fondly as anyone who knew Granny Liz thought of her.

Oh! My heart is just welling up! The memories I have of times at the lake are so sweet, and I love remembering every time Granny Liz hugged my neck, and said, "Hey Katy!" like she never missed a beat. Those pictures from the old days are precious. Thank you, Lord, for grandparents! Your boys are going to love Granny Liz's lake house too. :)

She loved you girls so much & was so proud of each of you! Your memories are my memories, although mine are 57 years old. She was my "Aunt Sissie" for that long & I remember playing dress up at her house too. She taught me how to be a lady & how to behave in social situations (foofy dinners, etc.) that my mom had not been exposed to. This will be hard because even though my parents were gone for several years, I still had Aunt Sissie. She will be missed by so many. She was a shiny spot in many many lives for many many years. I'm so thankful she had you & all the Purdys!
